the Lamborghini LM002

The Lamborghini been the first real SUV ever build. From 1986 to 1993 Lamborghini build 301 of these great cars, years before the word SUV (Sports Utility Vehicle ) was invented.

In the beginning the LM002 was powered by the 12 cylinder engine with 5167cc that was designed to power the Contact 5000QV and a manual 5-speed gearshift. Later you could order the Lamborghini LM002 with a V12 engine with 7200cc and around 600HP, an engine that was usually used in class 1 offshore racing boats. Now the six dual-throat Weber carburettors where changed to Bosch K-Jetronic fuel injection . In this case the car was called LM004. This version was only available in the USA.
Even though it’s weight of 2700kg the car’s acceleration was breathtaking for it’s time, 0-100km/h in 7.8 seconds. It was fitted with a 290 liter fuel tank as consumption of the V12 was somewhere between 25 and 48 litres for 100 kilometres.
The 325mm tires where specially designed and produced for the LM002 by Pirelli. Quite a challenge at that time, as the enormous weight of the car with it’s top speed of 210km/h. They came in two versions. Either sand or mixed use. No other tires where available.
Interior all leather with matching wool carpets and an Alpine Power stereo system mounted in a roof console, power windows and air condition. Pretty much everything that was available in the late eighties.
The first car was delivered to H.R.H King Hassan of Morocco. Sylvester Stallone owned one, also Tina Turner, Van Halen, Malcom Forbes, Mike Tysson and Pablo Escobar, to name only a view.
Today, the LM002 is a very rare sight and lots of those cars are lost or hidden away in private collections. If you want to buy one they start at somewhere around 150.000€, not really a bargain, but at least you won’t be unnoticed when you drop off your kids at school.
The LM002 is one of our favourite cars, very crazy, lots of power and probably very complicated to repair…..we still love the LM002!

the Marcos GT, an underestimated classic

Unknown-1

Unknown-1

Except if you lived on another planet for 20 years, you are aware that classic cars are fashion and the demand is pretty high these days.

This mechanism, well known to traders and art collector, had a crazy impact on prices. Some shitty cars, for example a not-well-repainted Citroën Ami 6, were sold 33700€ last year in Monaco (expected not more than 6000€ by experts).

The problem is complicated for the real car enthusiast, and the same question appears for each of them: which classic car affordable can I buy???

So today, let’s talk about a forgotten and unrecognized classic car, less than 30000 € and with many qualities, a real GT: the MARCOS GT.

The Marcos GT was produced by Marcos Industry, a company co-founded by Jem Marsh and Frank Costin (designer of the famous Jaguar Lister Costin).

As many stories, this one starts in a Pub in England 1959. At this time, many races were club races and they decided to build an ultralight car to win this kind of races.

The prototype is made with a wood chassis (such as Morgan, crazy roast-beef) and Bill Moss won 9 of 10 races with the prototype. At this time, a young race driver called Jackie Stewart is impressed by the car and order one in 1960.

Starts a long story with financial problems for Marcos Industry, the company cannot find enough found and sells are too low to earn money.  But in 1964, Marcos comes back with a new car, still with wooden parts with the Marcos 1800, powered by a Volvo B18 engine 1783cc, 118 HP with 2 Weber carburetors and 772 kg!images-3

According to the press and race driver who tried it, this car is very good on track and also on open roads. A GT-Race car, with a aggressive driving position, very good handling, precise direction and fast, with enough power for the weight.

To reduce cost of the car, the engine change in 1967 for the Ford Kent 1599 cc (100 HP or 120 HP prepared by Lawrence Tune). Then in 1969, the V6 Ford 3 liters replace the 4 cylinders, and for US approval (reduction of engine pollution in the US in the 70’s), the V6 Ford is replaced by a V6 Volvo 3 liter 140 HP one year later. To reassure customers, the wood structure where replaced by steel on the V6 versions, increasing weight to 1065kg.

Nowadays, you can find a Marcos GT for less than 30 000 €, so less than the Ami 6 from Monte Carlo but it could be hard to find it in good conditions. Most of the cars are right hand drive, so you need to consider a conversion in addition of buying.  There is still some very good GT available ready to use.

images-5For the design, the shape is interesting, very close to 60’s Italian design (CF Bizzarrini) but with an English touch. It’s not discrete for sure and everybody has an opinion on the car, some like the look and some don’t.

The fact is that you can have a very good and reliable classic GT, that allows you to run on a racetrack on Saturday, enjoy little roads with Madame the Sunday and even go to work during the week if you have a parking with style.

With every engine, the car is interesting, but seems better in a lightweight configuration with the 1800 or 1600. Unfortunately, the car price will probably not increase in the future, due to lack of recognition, but maybe a crazy new rich guy from a small principality would buy it for 100 000€.

The New Alfa 4C

Screen Shot 2014-08-25 at 4.44.11First of all WE LOVE THIS CAR!!! Yes, we really do !
It ain’t perfect, but that’s normal, it’s Italian. If you want something perfect you buy german. But we often feel like perfect things are a little boring. And this Alfa 4C is everything else but boring! It’s noisy, it’s nervous, it has it’s little issues, it’s a beauty! Maybe it’s what some people call character…. well…. it’s Italian and it’s wild.
It’s small and not easy to get in. It’s not as bad as a Lotus Elise, but once you are seated it is not easy to get out. But we don’t want to get out anyway. Once seated on the carbon/ leather seats it feels really comfortable and right on the street. A little bit like in a go cart! And the 4 cylinder turbo charged engine right behind you….241HP for 895kg and a top speed of 258 km/h…..once you started this engine it rattles, it whistles, it screams and the only thing you want to do is close the door and give it a little spanking. And that’s what we did.
Honestly, the Alfa 4C is not a highway cruiser and it doesn’t like bad tarmac but what it is made for a little mountain and countryside roads. It just sticks to the road like it was glued to it. The engine has all the power you want, always ready to put it on the road for more acceleration and speed ( 0-100k,/h in 4.5 seconds ! ). It’s been a while an Alfa did feel like this!!!
The interior is a mixture of leather, carbon and plastic. It looks OK, but nothing more . We still like it.
What we like best about this car is it’s price! They start selling the 4C at 54.400€ and that really is not too much money for this much fun and beauty and a piece of Italian lifestyle!!!

Ferrari California T

Screen Shot 2014-06-30 at 6.25.07

Screen Shot 2014-06-30 at 6.24.25It’s been 25 years since Ferrari didn’t turbocharged their engines. Actually, since the death of Enzo Ferrari. The last turbocharged engine they put into one of the most amazing super cars ever. The fabulous and so special F40. And it was mister Enzo Ferrari who ordered so back then.
But now they did it again. The Ferrari California T’s V8 engine as now 560 HP and hits 100kmh after 3.6 seconds. To pass 200kmh it needs only 11.2 seconds and top speed is 316 kmh. This is pretty cool!
They are talking about 10.5 l /100km but we do not really believe them. On the other side, if you buy this Ferrari for 409.888 $ you will probably not be short of fuel-cash…..so nobody really cares.
It has a sweet Brembo carbon-ceramic brakes with latest ABS technology that stop this beauty after 34 m if you glide at 100kmh.

Screen Shot 2014-06-30 at 6.25.35

The mid-front mounted engine gives it an ideal weight distribution of 47% front 53% rear, and they lowered the engine another 4 cm to optimize their center of gravity. All this gives the California T perfect traction and it is one of the greatest pleasures to feel the wind in your hair and the tires glued to the road while racing through the Italian mountain roads…..not talking about the sound that caress your ears…..it’s as close to petrol head paradise as it can get.
The rest is pretty much standard and absolutely beautiful. The leather finish and the feeling when you take a seat. A great work of Italian design and style. Electronics to choose if you race a track or if you are just cruising easy ( between race mode and casual cruising it’s like changing cars!! Very, very impressive! ) It’s a fantastic car, a perfect daily driver and a great GT. Our friends at Ferrari did a stunning job.
This car has everything to fall in love with……if there wasn’t its price tag.

The SADA Bicycle

Screen Shot 2014-05-23 at 11.55.36

Screen Shot 2014-05-23 at 11.55.36 Yes, we know, we just talked about the wooden bicycle recently, but we think that the bike designed and invented by Gianluca Sada deserves an article.

When we saw images of this bike, we instantly fell in love! How cool is this bicycle!! It has 26″ wheels, riding position seems to be very comfortable and if you fold it up it will nearly fit in your shopping bag or in your backpack.
The most stunning thing is it’s look. No spokes! No greasy chain! That’s  pretty awesome!
And when folded you can store the bike anywhere without getting dirty at all.
We just hope that this bicycle will go into production and not stay only a great idea and a prototype!

The Espresso Machine for Petrolheads

Screen Shot 2014-05-07 at 10.43.30
The Espresso Veloce Machine
This espresso machine from Espresso Veloce is probably one of the most beautiful coffee makers that you can buy if you are into enginesThey are custom made in Italy, you can choose colors and how many cylinders you need. You have the choice between 6, 8 or 12, depending how much space you have on your kitchen counter.

Screen Shot 2014-05-07 at 10.44.41

Screen Shot 2014-05-07 at 10.44.05

We like that it is very heavy starting at 23 kg ), the titanium and the stainless steel and the overall finish. It is a limited series production, only 500 will be made and they look fantastic.
There is just one little thing that stops me from ordering one…...the machine starts at 15000$. That is a bit steep for a machine that pours your coffee and cannot make a cappuccino…..and on top I do not have enough space….even for a 4 cylinder.
Check it out here
